Vitiligo Treatment
Vitiligo is a chronic skin disease that causes loss of pigment, resulting in irregular pale patches of skin. It can be resistant to most non-surgical medical treatments. Surgical interventions include skin grafts which attempt to transfer pigment cells onto the affected areas. However such grafts can cause visible and unpleasant scarring.
Melanocytes (pigment cells) are the cells in charge synthesizing melanine, the pigment responsible for the pigmentation of the skin, and they are found in the basal layer of the epidermis and in hair follicles. The hair follicle is an important reservoir of melanocytes. Repigmentation in vitiligo, when it occurs, starts in the follicle units. It has been shown that the hair follicle whose bulb has been removed (to prevent hair growth) plays a useful role in treating vitiligo.
Bioscor offers hair follicle grafting which has been shown to produce successful repigmentation on the affected area with no or minimal scarring thus giving a permanent and pleasant aesthetic result. The grafts are obtained through a scar-free method of follicular unit extraction.
